Thermal State of the Guaymas Basin Derived From Gas Hydrate Bottom Simulating Reflections and Heat Flow Measurements

چکیده
Seafloor heat flow provides information about the thermal evolution of lithosphere, magnitude and timing volcanic activity, hydrothermal circulation patterns. In central Gulf California, Guaymas Basin is part a young marginal spreading rift system that experiences high sedimentation (1–5 km/Myr) widespread magmatic intrusions in axial troughs off-axis regions. Heat variations record sedimentary processes affecting basin. Here, we present new seismic evidence bottom-simulating reflection (BSR) northwestern Basin. Using BSR depths conductivity measurements, determine geothermal gradient surface variations. The BSR-derived values are less than conductive lithospheric predictions for mid-oceanic ridges. They suggest (0.3–1 suppresses flow. southeastern regions basin, increases as intruded units reach shallower subsurface depths. Thermal modeling shows recent (<5,000 years) igneous (<500 m below seafloor) associated fluid elevate up to five times. gradients correlate little with depth shallowest emplacements north, where have already cooled some time, activity shut down.

Heat flow, hydrothermal circulation and basalt intrusions in the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California
The Guaymas Basin is part of an en echelon series of short, seafloor-spreading segments in the Gulf of California. The basin is separated from adjacent deeps by long, northwest-southeast-striking transform faults, and divided into subparallel, northern and southern troughs which trend northeast to southwest. Rapid sedimentation (1 to 5 m ka 1) results in a striking morphological contrast betwee...

Ocean Drilling Program and Deep Sea Drilling Project downhole data from three areas, the southwestern Japan Nankai margin, the continental slope off Peru, and the Blake-Bahama Outer Ridge, provide temperature calibrations for bottom simulating reflectors (BSR) that mark the base of a clathrate hydrate stability field. The inferred temperatures at BSRs provide an important reference for the mapp...
متن کاملGas hydrate measurements at Hydrate Ridge using Raman spectroscopy
Oceanic gas hydrates have been measured near the seafloor for the first time using a seagoing Raman spectrometer at Hydrate Ridge, Oregon, where extensive layers of hydrates have been found to occur near the seafloor. All of the hydrates analyzed were liberated from the upper meter of the sediment column near active gas venting sites in water depths of 770– 780 m. Hydrate properties, such as st...
متن کاملGas hydrate stability zone modeling in the Krishna Godavari Basin, Eastern margin of India
The Krishna Godavari (KG) basin is rich in gas hydrate and exhibits an area of wide range of gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ). In this region, we modeled the base of the gas hydrate stability zone (BGHSZ) utilizing in situ temperature measurements acquired during national gas hydrate program (NGHP) Expedition-01. The bottom simulation reflector (BSR) closely approximates the BGHSZ, and due to ...
